HOWEVER impressive the first edition of any reference book may seem, subsequent editions always profit from the foundations laid by their precursors: this is certainly true of Harts’ and Collins’s works. Not only do language and usage develop over time, there is a practical difficulty inherent in compiling books devoted to things that even clever people get wrong: as Collins remarked in the first edition of his Dictionary, ‘That more than twenty thousand separate entries, containing more than one hundred thousand words, and many of these not easily spelt, should have survived without any error, is more than can be hoped for.’

Between them the Oxford Dictionary for Writers & Editors and the Oxford Guide to Style have accrued more than two centuries of people’s comments, concerns, and queries on every aspect of the written word. This gradually accumulated development—with alterations, improvements, and corrections amassed over time from a broad spectrum of sources—is an invaluable source of knowledge, one that cannot be fabricated in any other way.
