Third edition (4th
impression) March 1909 Two major changes took place in this edition: first, the books name was altered to Authors and Printers Dictionary; and secondly, the binding and format were changed from the previous editions. No longer case bound, instead the binding is a cheaper affair: plain beige pasteboard panels secured with a tape spine, no head- or tailbands, 17 × 10 cm (6 3/4 × 4 inches): case-binding would not reappear until the seventh edition. Printed on the spine-tape is AUTHORS AND PRINTERS DICTIONARY, upside-down (i.e. to be read from bottom to top when upright on a bookshelf, in the European fashion). The printed front cover (click to see pop-up image, 55k) is identical to the full-title page, apart from the absence of a date and the presence of a price (one shilling net). Internally, however, the book was not reset, and alterations being incorporated within existing text. The Preface is identical to that in the second edition, with a short Preface to the Third Edition (similar to the second editions) following on in the space available (see text below). The Readers of the Proofs of this Work is identical save the addition of J. A. Wood following C. T. White (a happy chance of alphabetization that this name fitted existing copy so well).
I have made some additions to the following pages, and a few minor alterations ; but the general principles remain unaltered. F. HOWARD COLLINS. TORQUAY, March, 1909.
